There are hundreds of models, several certification classes and no shortage of strong opinions on the hill. The useful question is not “Which wing is best?” It is: Which wing is appropriate for your present experience, currency, weight and flying?
Before buying
Paragliding is not for everybody, so have proper instruction before investing in a complete setup. Buying during training can be useful when your instructor is involved: they can check suitability, help you understand your own equipment and identify problems with used or ex-demo gear.
Do not choose a school solely because it offers free or discounted training with an equipment package. Choose the training environment and instructor that feel right, then make the equipment decision with proper context.
Start with the decisions that matter
A sensible shortlist starts with the pilot and the intended use—not a favourite brand, review score or attractive colour scheme.

The EN class gives useful information about test behaviour, but two wings in the same class can still feel and demand very different things from the pilot.
Wing size must be selected from the complete weight carried in flight—not naked body weight or body weight plus a convenient guess.
Weekend ridge soaring, hike-and-fly, coastal flying and regular mountain XC place different demands on materials, handling, weight and durability.
A cheaper wing that needs inspection, line work or repairs may cost more than expected. Parts, service support and known history also have value.
Understanding certification
Certification testing describes how a wing behaved during defined test manoeuvres. It does not measure your judgement, currency, site conditions or ability to prevent and manage incidents.
Maximum passive-safety emphasis
Designed around forgiving behaviour, accessible handling and strong passive safety. This is the normal starting area for many first-wing conversations.
A very broad category
EN B contains a wide range of designs, from relatively accessible “low-B” wings to demanding high-performance models commonly described as “high-B.”
Experienced and current pilots
Designed for experienced pilots with regular airtime, well-developed active-flying skills and the ability to manage reduced passive safety.
Specialist high-performance equipment
Specialist wings intended for highly experienced, current pilots who understand the consequences of limited passive safety and demanding recovery behaviour.

Your first wing
The most useful first wing is one that encourages you to ground handle, launch cleanly, fly regularly and remain mentally available for learning.
A wing that is too demanding can consume attention. Instead of reading the air, practising approaches and improving decision-making, the pilot becomes preoccupied with the aircraft.
For many pilots, a suitable EN A provides ample performance while leaving a healthy margin for imperfect inputs and developing skill. A carefully selected accessible EN B may be appropriate for some pilots, but that should be an individual decision made with an instructor—not a default upgrade.
Selecting the correct size
Enter realistic values for everything that leaves the ground with you. This tool totals the weight only; always use the manufacturer’s current certified range and obtain advice about where within that range you should fly.
Manufacturers may publish more than one range, including certified and recommended ranges. Loading affects handling, speed, sink, inflation and how the wing feels in turbulence. Discuss the exact model and intended flying with a competent adviser.
Match the construction to the use
When airtime is irregular, prioritise accessible handling, straightforward inflation, passive safety and a wing that forgives periods of reduced currency.
Consider handling, useful speed range, comfort in active air and performance, but remain honest about whether your currency supports the model.
Lower pack weight is valuable when walking to launch, but lighter materials can require more careful handling, storage and site selection.
Lightweight materials are generally a poor match for frequent abrasive sand, rough dunes and salt-laden environments. Durability deserves greater priority.
Pack volume and weight matter, but not at the cost of choosing a wing that is inappropriate for unfamiliar terrain or variable conditions.
Regular handling is invaluable. In abrasive or strong conditions, a separate ground-handling wing can reduce wear on your main flying equipment.
The decisions people often make too early
Pilots often recommend the wing they currently love, and schools naturally know some brands better than others. Established manufacturers generally produce strong products, but service, importer support, parts and local knowledge are worth considering.

Budget for the complete airworthy system: wing, harness, reserve, helmet, instrument, radio, inspection, reserve installation and any missing accessories.
A lower purchase price does not automatically mean lower total cost, particularly when used equipment needs testing, repair or replacement components.
It is reasonable to prefer a colour scheme you enjoy, but it should only decide between genuinely suitable options. Never allow colour or immediate availability to move you into the wrong size or model.
Visibility can also be a useful consideration when selecting a colour scheme.

A used wing may be an excellent first purchase, but age, appearance and stated airtime do not establish its condition.
Fabric can lose porosity, lines can shrink or stretch, trim can change and repairs may be difficult to recognise in photographs. Ask for documentary evidence and arrange a suitable inspection when the history or condition is uncertain.

This checklist does not inspect or approve a paraglider. A competent physical inspection may still be required.
Avoid the familiar traps
Choose equipment for current ability and realistic near-term development, not an imagined future version of your flying.
The B category is broad. Research the exact model, manufacturer recommendation and required pilot profile.
The complete flying system can add a meaningful amount to the number used for selecting wing size.
A cheap unsuitable wing remains unsuitable. Availability should not decide certification class, size or model.
Lightweight materials, high aspect ratio and sporty handling may be poor choices for rough launches, sand, infrequent flying or strong local conditions.
Reviews describe somebody else’s weight, experience, conditions and preferences. They cannot replace individual advice.

A message containing only “Is this wing good?” rarely has a responsible yes-or-no answer.

Loading changes the character of a wing. Higher loading generally makes it feel faster and more dynamic; lower loading may feel more relaxed but can also affect handling and penetration. The best position depends on the exact model, conditions and pilot preference.
