Colombia Guided XC Paragliding Tour

Two weeks of warm winter flying in Colombia, designed for both lower-time XC pilots and experienced distance pilots. One shared adventure, two guided flying groups, and a flexible route through Piedechinche, Santa Elena, Roldanillo and the classic Cauca Valley flying areas.

Two Guides. Two Flying Groups. Nobody Held Back.

This trip is built around two types of pilot. Lower-time pilots can join without needing previous XC-trip experience, because Nick will lead a progression-focused group with thermalling practice, confidence building, decision-making and first cross-country flights. More experienced XC pilots will not be held back, because Daniel will lead a distance-focused group for pilots who want to push bigger routes and maximise the day.

Why Colombia?

Colombia is one of the best winter paragliding destinations in the world. While Europe is cold and inconsistent, Colombia offers warm thermic flying, reliable XC potential, spectacular mountain scenery and some of the most famous flying areas in South America.

This trip is not a rigid sightseeing itinerary. It is a flying tour. We keep the plan flexible so that we can use the best sites for the weather, the group and the day. The broad structure is simple: we arrive into Cali, transfer to the Piedechinche and Santa Elena area for the first week, then move north towards Roldanillo and La Unión for the second week.

Starting in Piedechinche gives everyone time to settle into Colombian conditions, understand the local flying, build confidence and start working with the two-group guiding system. In the second week, the Roldanillo and La Unión area gives us access to one of Colombia’s classic XC regions, with bigger route options for the distance group and structured progression tasks for lower-time pilots.

This is also not just an “eat, sleep, fly, repeat” holiday. We want to enjoy Colombia properly while we are there: eat well, experience the towns we stay in, meet local people where possible, and absorb some of the culture, food, coffee-region atmosphere and colour that make the country so special.

The aim is to give every pilot the right level of support. Lower-time pilots get proper mentorship and confidence-building. Experienced XC pilots get a more ambitious plan and are not held back by the progression group.

Two Types of Pilot - Two Flying Groups

The whole point of this trip is that pilots do not all have to fly at the same pace. Each day we split the group according to experience, confidence and ambition. This means lower-time pilots are not pushed too hard, and experienced XC pilots are not held back.

Lower-Time XC Progression Group

Mentorship • Thermalling • Confidence • First XC flights

XC progression paragliding group in Colombia

This group is for safe, independent pilots who want to develop their XC flying without being thrown in at the deep end. You do not need to have been on an XC trip before. You should already be able to launch, land and fly independently, but you may want more support with thermalling, route choice, confidence and decision-making.

This group is ideal if you want help with:

  • Thermalling technique and climb efficiency
  • Confidence in active air
  • Flying safely with other pilots
  • Knowing when to leave a climb
  • Planning your first XC flights
  • Choosing sensible landing options
  • Understanding Colombian flying conditions

You will not be expected to keep up with the distance group. Your flying will be guided at the right pace for your level.

Experienced Distance XC Group

Bigger routes • Longer flights • Maximise distance

Distance XC paragliding in Colombia

This group is for pilots who already thermal confidently, have some XC experience and want to use Colombia for bigger flights. The focus is on route planning, tactical decisions, transitions, cloudbase use, speed, distance and getting the most from each flyable day.

This group is ideal if you already:

  • Thermal confidently without constant support
  • Have previous XC experience
  • Are comfortable flying with other pilots
  • Can make safe independent decisions
  • Want to push distance in the Cauca Valley
  • Are comfortable landing out and using retrieves
  • Want a more ambitious flying plan each day

You will not be held back by the progression group. Daniel will work with the stronger pilots while Nick supports the lower-time XC pilots.

Trip Structure

We deliberately do not publish a fixed day-by-day itinerary. Colombia is a flying trip, and the best plan will depend on weather, local advice, road logistics, pilot level and the objectives of the two groups. Instead, we work from a simple two-week structure.

Arrival Day

Saturday 23 January 2027 — Cali Airport Pickup

We collect the group from Cali airport, help everyone settle in, check equipment, run through the trip briefing and transfer to the Piedechinche / Santa Elena area.

Week One

Piedechinche / Santa Elena Valley

The first week is based around Piedechinche and Santa Elena. This gives everyone time to settle into Colombian conditions, understand the local flying, build confidence and start working with the two-group guiding system.

Lower-time pilots focus on thermalling, active flying, confidence, landing options and first XC decisions. Experienced pilots can begin pushing distance when conditions allow.

Week Two

Roldanillo / La Unión / Northern Cauca Valley

For the second week we move north towards the Roldanillo and La Unión area. This is where the trip becomes more XC-focused, with classic Colombian routes, bigger distance potential, retrieves and more ambitious flying for the pilots who want it.

The progression group continues with structured XC mentorship, while the distance group can push on with Daniel and make the most of the stronger days.

Final Flying Day

Friday 5 February 2027

Friday is planned as the final flying day. We will use the best available site for the weather and finish the trip with a final debrief and last night in Colombia.

Departure Day

Saturday 6 February 2027 — Airport Transfers

After the final night, we transfer pilots back to Cali airport for flights home.

The route is flexible by design. We do not promise a rigid daily itinerary because the correct flying plan is decided by the weather, the group and the local conditions.

What a Typical Flying Day Looks Like

Most days start with a weather briefing, site discussion and a plan for both groups. We look at the day’s forecast, likely climbs, wind, cloudbase, possible routes, retrieve options and the best plan for the progression group and the distance group.

At launch, pilots receive a site briefing and clear guidance for the day. Once airborne, the progression group can work on thermalling, confidence and shorter achievable tasks, while the distance group can push further when conditions allow. After flying, retrieves bring the group back together for food, discussion and debrief.

Pilot Requirements

You should be able to:

  • Launch confidently in suitable conditions
  • Land safely in normal landing fields

  • Thermal with other pilots
  • Follow a site briefing
  • Make safe independent decisions

You must bring:

  • Radio
  • Vario / GPS instrument
  • Phone with tracking and maps
  • Insurance covering paragliding, medical treatment and repatriation

You do not need to be an experienced XC pilot to join the progression group, but you do need to be a safe, independent pilot. If you are unsure whether you are ready, contact us before booking.

Why Book Colombia With ParaglidingGuide?

We specialise in small-group guided paragliding trips with honest coaching, clear briefings and practical support. Colombia is an incredible place to fly, but mixed-level groups only work well when they are managed properly.

By running two guided groups, we can help lower-time pilots progress safely without asking them to chase the strongest pilots every day. At the same time, experienced XC pilots have a separate guide and can make the most of Colombia’s distance potential.

One group. Two levels of flying. A better trip for everyone.
